Sew Smart: Skills for Life Overview
*This course runs for 9 weeks. Payment is taken in 4 monthly installments starting from when you book.
This course is part of Future Threads: Sustainable Sewing Series for Young Creatives, you can read more about this initiative below.
This sewing course is designed for beginners and for what we call Level 1 (students who have been with us before and have used a sewing machine).
This kids sewing course has been designed with a strong focus on real-life sewing skills children can take forward into adulthood. It’s not just about making projects—it’s about giving them the knowledge to repair, reuse, and upcycle what they already have.
Learn to 'visibly mend' in creative ways, and upcycle with confidence. In this fun and hands-on after-school sewing course, children will gain the practical skills every young person should know to look after and reinvent their clothes. Over 9 weeks, we’ll cover everything from essential clothing repairs to creative upcycling projects, giving kids the tools to be both resourceful and imaginative.
Our aim is to make sewing useful and exciting—because being able to hem a skirt, patch up jeans, or add your own creative flair is a skill that lasts a lifetime!
Children will practice these skills on fabric in class, however we also encourage students to bring 1–2 clothing items from home. Together, we’ll review and discuss if they’re suitable for class projects so that they can work on their own clothes and really get the benefit of these new skills.
What will my child learn?
How to set up a sewing machine…and troubleshoot
How to accurately use a measuring tape for alterations
How to hem a skirt or take up trousers
How to sew on a button and snap fastners
How to make covered buttons
Problem-solving by looking at clothing items and deciding how to repair or transform them
Repairing rips, tears, and holes (perfect for jeans!)
Adding pockets to clothing and accessories
Creative patchwork and applique techniques
Confidence in using sewing tools safely and effectively
What is included?
Everything…We want our classes to be stress-free. Life is busy enough and we want you to be able to drop off your child knowing everything is looked after. However as this is an alterations and upcycling class, students are invited to bring along 1-2 items of clothing that they would like to work on (take up hem, add pockets, fix a tear) but if they do noth have anything all techniques will be taught using fabric.
Sewing machines are provided, but if your child has their own, they are welcome to bring it along; just please let us know at hello@creativeassemble.com
